A Well-Rounded Note

Both the lows and the highs matter!

Inspiration

I've had the privilege of spending the past two weeks at staff training for the summer camp that I'm going to work at later this summer. Before I go into this post, can I just tell you how encouraged I am? I truly met some of the most amazing people, and it's even more amazing that they want to spend their summers pouring into the lives of kids. It truly gives me goosebumps.

While I'm inspired by my co-workers and friends, this wasn't the particular moment that I wanted to write about. Here's the context: since I had been cheering so much at camp, I was absolutely losing my voice. For those of you who are singers out there, or have ever lost your voice, you know that your voice sounds so much deeper once it's going away. With that, during worship I would sing a lot lower than I usually did.

Here's where my post inspiration comes in: my friend, Abby, and I would harmonize during worship. She came up to me and said, "I know you're losing your voice, but the notes you were singing made the harmony round out perfectly."

The Lows

I'm a firm believer in acknowledging that life isn't always perfect. There are times where we have to walk through the valleys of life, the low notes, if you will. I don't know about you, but when someone mentions the lows or struggles of life, they usually carry a negative connotation with them. But there is a certain beauty within the low notes. Our struggles teach us to persevere, that life is a battle worth fighting. We need the low notes. It's where we grow the most and make the journey of life more full.

The Highs

Life is also filled with wonderful moments of celebration and goodness. Continuing with the harmony metaphor, the high notes would represent those moments. It's when the joy in your life is so resounding that other people can hear over any and all the noise. We need the high notes. It's where we are quickest to appreciate the beauty of life, they're periods of restoration for us.

And the In Betweens!

Life doesn't always exist in the extremes—it's really about learning how to navigate and love the every day in betweens. It's the melody notes of the harmony that keep us rooted. They're the tune by which we live our daily lives; they're not always noticed in the same way as highs or lows, but they're our foundation.

Everyone's melody is different, but each one is beautiful. When we learn to love the melody as much as we do the harmonies, then, and only then, will we truly be able to love life.

I know I got a little musical on you today, but the harmony metaphor really just clicked for me. It's a quick post, but it all just made sense to me. Life is a song—what a privilege it is that we get to dance and sing to it!
