"Choose celebration over comparison." - Annalea Gulley
My friend, Annalea, said this when we were talking about social media. She was reminding us that social media is usually a highlight reel of the best parts of someone's life, but that doesn't mean we can't celebrate or appreciate what someone is posting. However, we don't have to see ourselves as less than just because we aren't posting or didn't have the same experience as the person who posted.
I needed that reminder.
Annalea is a leader who knows how to use her position to pour into those around her. So, I want to unpack how this quote poured into me (and could pour into you)!
Why Does This Quote Matter?
First off, I wanted to share this because it’s catchy and easy to remember. I, for one, am a sucker for alliteration. So when she said this, I was already a huge fan.
But aside from the surface-level of the quote, I think this is something our culture needs to hear today.
We seem to have a mindset that if someone else achieves success, there’s less success for me to achieve—as if success is only in stock for a limited amount of time. With that, when someone else achieves, we can’t or don’t know how to celebrate them. We see competition if someone succeeds, even if their success is in a realm that we don't necessarily compete in or care about.
But we aren't made to exist in a mindset of jealousy—it's consuming and puts us in a very negative place. We should celebrate one another! After all, we usually don't know what kind of mountain someone had to climb to get to that peak that they are at now; there's always more to someone under the surface. With that, there is so much to celebrate: both the person's achievement and the person themself.
Even if someone's success is in an area where you seek success, doesn't mean that you can't ever achieve. There are great things in store for you! Maybe they're just not what you had expected.
