"If you live every day..."

August quote of the month from a dear friend of mine, whose wisdom never ceases to amaze me.

"If you live every day like it's your last, you'll become numb to that mantra. I think you should love everyday like it's your last." - David Gardner

David was leading a devotional when he said this, and I think it would be a big mistake to not highlight this nugget of wisdom. It was at the end of the year, so it was an encouragement to the graduating seniors to lead a life that they love, as well as the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors to create an atmosphere of love. Such an important lesson! That being said, I believe there's more to talk about within this quote.

Why Does This Quote Matter?

To start off this reflection, I just want to recognize what a beautiful sentiment this is. Simply wow.

I think the thing that stood out most to me is the difference between living life like it's your last and loving life like it's your last. While both may be inspirational or encouraging, I think the latter is a healthier mindset. You see, the difference between living and loving is the value you put on your time. Typically, the phrase "live like it's your last day" is to remind people to be in the moment, which is absolutely an important thing.

However, I feel like only looking at the present moment is just as detrimental as being stuck in the past or constantly worrying about the future. That's where love comes in. When you love every day, you take the beauty of all parts of life into account. You can love the present day by finding good in it. If you're struggling to find the good in today, then look to yesterday and smile on the past. And if neither of those help you to love every day, then look towards the future and love that good things are coming. It is only when we can see through a lens of love that we will be able to positively change our lives.

I hope this quote is an encouragement to you that leading a life of love will ultimately increase your personal joy as you appreciate each and every day that you have to be alive. May August bring many blessings into your life!
