As second semester ends, this post seems only fitting!
Inspiration
Looking back at my past posts, I saw that I ended my senior year with a post called "Goodbye vs. See You Later." It was a season of wrapping up high school and unwrapping the gift that would be college. The difference between goodbyes and see-you-laters became a powerful reminder to me that, just because I may not see people for some time, I won't just lose people in my life.
The other day at dinner, one of my friends looked at us and said, "I think it's a good thing that we have people that make us sad about saying goodbye."
Wow. I don't think I've thought about it like that before...
Good in Goodbye
Perhaps being sad about saying goodbye is a good thing.
It means we mourn the fact that there will be distance between us because we would rather be together. We're saddened when we sense a change in something that has been good. Well, when you frame it like that, it makes saying goodbye a much more positive thing than how I usually see it—it's an indicator of a heart filled with love.
Goodbyes are powerful reminders to be thankful for the people, places, and experiences in our lives. In the current season of life I'm in, the goodbyes that I've had to say have shown me how much I've grown as an individual. They've taught me when to hold on and when to let go. They've reminded me that some goodbyes are goodbye, others are simply see you soon. No matter what, I can see how love was there through each and every parting.
What an honor it is to have people to miss, since we love them so dearly.
Sweetness in "See You Soon"
No, these aren't permanent goodbyes, but that doesn't mean it's not hard to say see you later, especially when "later" means months from now. Saying goodbye to my dear friends from college has made this past week really difficult and, quite frankly, emotionally draining. After having spent pretty much every day with them for the past year, it's strange to imagine going months without them.
But even still, space can create room for growth in friendships. It's a time where we learn how to communicate and support one another differently than we have been. I get to see their triumphs and cheer them on, their tears and mourn with them, in spite of the distance. It makes our reunion even sweeter when we have the opportunity to miss each other.
Perhaps "see you soon" is a blessing in disguise, a sweet candy that we get to unwrap with time.
To all of the people I've said see you later to, I miss you. My heart is filled with joy for you and the ways you will change the world. Sometimes I'm saddened by the distance between us, but I know that we will see each other again. Thank you for your impact on my life. It's not goodbye, it's see you later—and for that, I am grateful.
