September's Quote of the Month for a time when social interactions are a little abnormal—read on for some epic wisdom!
One of my friends was giving a devotional about appreciating the people around us when he said something that really struck me:
"There's a difference between spending time around people and spending time with people." — Connor English
Wow.
Am I the only one who's never thought of this? It seems so simple, yet it hit me like a truck. I suppose it hit different because we're in a time where face-to-face time is restricted, but, still, this quote is so worth talking about.
Why Does This Quote Matter?
First of all, let's establish the difference. "Spending time around people" makes other people mere company. "Spending time with people" makes other people true companions. The word "around" means that you're simply in the presence of people, "with" implies that you're spending time in community with those people.
This is sort of a "feeling alone in a crowd sort of thing." There may be a lot of people around you, but you don't know them personally or have a relationship with them. I feel like this is such a common feeling nowadays, especially with technology: someone may have lots of followers, but that doesn't necessarily equate to having lots of friends. I want to encourage you to pursue active, genuine relationships outside of technology. I promise that face to face relationships are so fulfilling and healthy, especially in this time where our interactions are limited because of COVID.
