Just some nuggets of wisdom for your week!
This is going to be a shorter post, but I wanted to post nonetheless. I think there's so much to learn in a "normal" week. We can learn from the people we interact with, the places we go, the situations we find ourselves in. Every moment of this life has the potential to be a learning experience. So, I want to share a couple of mine from this past week!
1. Family may drive you crazy, but they ultimately keep you sane.
This past weekend was Family Weekend at my school, which means that my family traveled from Colorado to see me in college. I hadn't seen them in person since move-in day, which was about a month and a half ago. It was so wonderful to be able to spend time with them, but especially to physically be in one another's presence. Of course I missed them, but I hadn't realized how much until I was able to see them.
I think we all can agree that family can drive us crazy sometimes. That's totally normal. But I think we can also say that family keeps us from going crazy. Personally, my family keeps me grounded and we take on the world together. However, I know not everyone has the same family dynamic as mine—that's okay! In this situation, I'm referring to "family" as the people you've made your heart's home and safe place with. Your true family doesn't have to be biological, it's the people you choose to let walk alongside you in life. It could be a mentor, a friend group, a distant family member, a work environment, your immediate family.
No matter who you find family in, they are the ones that keep you going, the ones that help you to see past the craziness and remember that you are an incredible human being. I needed that reminder this week, and I was fortunate enough to receive it through my family.
2. Good music is food for the soul.
I didn't realize how much I listened to music before I came to college. I started feeling that gap within the first couple weeks; since I don't drive anywhere, I don't have dedicated time to listen to music. And here's my dilemma that I'm still dealing with: I have a goal to not be plugged into my phone when walking from class to class. So when can I listen to music? In all honesty, I'm still figuring it out. But I've noticed a difference in my days when I do find time to listen to music, even if just for 15 minutes—my mood definitely is boosted.
That being said, I encourage you to listen to music that makes you feel seen, valid, and loved. Music is just like food in the way that if you eat healthy, your body will be healthier. In the same way, what you feed your mind through music is how you'll feel in your own skin and mind. Whatever you put into your mind, you will find it there. So put the good stuff in and listen to some soul food!
(If you're looking for new music, some of my favorite artists at the moment are Noah Kahan, The National Parks, and WILD. Or you can keep an eye out for the Songs of the Week on my Instagram!)
3. A smile goes a long way.
Friend, don't forget to smile. Your smile brings so much joy. It's the most powerful weapon you have against negativity. Plus, smiling boosts your own serotonin—it makes you just as happy as the person who is on the receiving end of your smile. There's no downside to a smile, so why wouldn't you share it? After all, you're never fully dressed without a smile!
