Everyone seems to have a different definition of beauty, but all of them say that I need to look good and have everything together. Can I be broken and beautiful at the same time?
There has been a movement within the last decade or so to redefine “beauty.” They were specifically trying to communicate that it’s beautiful to not look like Barbie. While I completely agree with this statement, I think that these redefining beauty campaigns still failed. Why? They never acknowledged the fact that beauty is inside of someone. In the same way that there are different body types, there are also different types of personalities, thought processes, passions, etc; it’s not only about someone’s body shape, but also the shape of their soul, heart, and mind.
I was talking with one of my friends who had been going through a really hard time in regards to her mental health. She told me that she was “broken into a million pieces that were scattered everywhere.” My heart broke for her and her.
True Beauty Shines Brighter
However, I noticed something strange: there were multiple beams of light coming from the mirror that lay on my floor. That’s when I found hope in the brokenness.
I realized that the more pieces of you there are, the more light you can reflect. The more shards of glass on the ground, the more beams of light reflected in the sky. Your brokenness has the potential to impact the people around you, and that is SUCH a beautiful thing. Not only are you beautiful in your brokenness, but your brokenness can allow for the manifestation of beauty in the lives of those around you.
Broken = Beautiful?
Can you be beautiful and broken at the same time? YES! First of all, you are always beautiful. Second, if you allow it to, your brokenness can make your beauty shine even brighter. So don't be ashamed of your flaws because they make you beautiful.
