"You don't always have to..."

Here comes the May quote of the month!!

"You don't always have to work on yourself. You can rest in who you are and what you feel, no matter what that may be." - Brendon Wanebo

This quote is from my dad. I start out by saying that because there is such profundity within the wisdom of a family member, something about it hits home even harder. I had called him because I was having a rough week and was really struggling with my self-worth. If you've read any of my other blog posts, you'll know that I'm a huge advocate for growth and promoting a growth mindset; so, I was really struggling with being in a place where I didn't feel as though I was growing.

Then he said this.

Immediately, I wrote it down on a sticky note—it's actually hanging on my photo wall in my dorm. I knew that I would need this reminder both now and later. Today I wanted to share this wisdom with you because it really meant a lot to me.

Why Does This Quote Matter?

We live in a culture of self-help and DIY and self-promotion. Myself, I, mine, me, me, me. We're supposed to focus on ourselves and ourselves alone.

We all feed into it, I know I do.

While I could talk about how this self-centered culture can be problematic (perhaps a later blog post?), I want to focus on a way of putting positivity into ourselves through our own minds. How can we use this self-promoting culture to create genuine growth within ourself?

We must act in love, that is, love towards ourselves. That means showing ourselves grace when we mess up, forgiveness when we fall short, and celebration when we achieve a goal.

It's a simple reminder that you are enough wherever you are at. That doesn't mean that you have to stay there in that place where you find yourself today, but it does mean that you can accept where you are. Self-acceptance is an incredibly difficult thing to do, but it's also one of the most freeing gifts you can give yourself.

What a wonderful encouragement! We are not only valid, but beautiful the way we are. I hope this reminder encouraged you today, I know it did for me.
